It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dudley Dean, one of the founding partners of our firm, at the age of 93.
Dudley was the “Dean” in Dean Wilson LLP, and a central figure in the formation of Weekes, Legg and Dean in 1972, whose offices were located at 4 & 5 Pavilion Buildings in Brighton. This partnership laid the foundation for the firm we know today.
Among his many contributions, Dudley played a leading role in the Brighton Marina public enquiry, which at the time was the largest case and fee in the firm’s history.
Following the untimely death of Laurie Legg in the mid-1970s, Dudley became a figure of stability and continuity for the firm throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He was known not only for his legal acumen but also for his forward-thinking approach to technology, championing innovations such as teleprinters, email, and open-plan working - the latter of which was adopted by the firm after his retirement.
Outside of work, Dudley was a keen farmer (spending much of his time at Ham Farm in Scaynes Hill), amateur dramatist and singer, particularly in retirement.
Perhaps most importantly, Dudley was deeply supportive of young lawyers, offering guidance, encouragement, and mentorship to many who would go on to become partners of our firm.
We invite all members of the Dean Wilson community to join us in reflecting on Dudley’s remarkable life and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.
