1. ABOUT THIS POLICY
1.1 Dean Wilson LLP is committed to protecting the privacy and security of your personal information. This cookie policy explains how our website uses cookies and similar technologies.
1.2 Dean Wilson LLP, of Ridgeland House, 165 Dyke Road, Brighton, BN3 1TL, is a limited liability partnership registered in England and Wales with registration number OC351755. We are authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA number 532989).
1.3 This website is not intended for children and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
1.4 This cookie policy should be read together with our Privacy Policy and our Terms of Business. Where those documents contain additional information about how we handle your personal data, they supplement (and do not override) this policy.
1.5 We keep this policy under regular review and may update it from time to time. The most current version will always be available on our website.
2. WHAT ARE COOKIES?
2.1 Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer or device by websites that you visit. They are widely used to make websites work, to work more efficiently, and to provide information to the website owner.
2.2 Cookies can be "first-party" (set by the website you are visiting) or "third-party" (set by another website or service, such as an analytics or video provider).
2.3 Cookies can also be "session" cookies (which are deleted when you close your browser) or "persistent" cookies (which remain on your device for a set period or until you delete them).
3. THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK
3.1 The use of cookies and similar technologies in the United Kingdom is governed by the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 (PECR), as amended by the Data Use and Access Act 2025, alongside the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).
3.2 Under PECR, we must obtain your consent before placing any cookies on your device, unless those cookies are strictly necessary for the operation of our website or fall within a recognised exception.
3.3 The Data Use and Access Act 2025 introduced new exceptions to the consent requirement under PECR. Cookies may now be placed without consent where they are used solely for limited statistical purposes (such as counting website visitors) or to adapt the appearance and functions of a website in line with a user's preferences, provided certain conditions are met.
3.4 Where cookies collect personal data (such as IP addresses or online identifiers), the UK GDPR applies to the processing of that data. Our lawful basis for processing personal data collected through analytics cookies is your consent. For strictly necessary cookies, our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in operating our website.
3.5 The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is responsible for enforcing PECR and the UK GDPR in relation to cookies and is actively reviewing the cookie practices of UK websites.
4. HOW WE USE COOKIES
4.1 Our website uses cookies for the following purposes:
(a) to ensure the website functions correctly and securely (strictly necessary cookies);
(b) to remember your cookie consent preferences;
(c) to collect anonymous information about how visitors use our website, so we can improve it (analytics cookies); and
(d) to enable the playback of embedded video content from YouTube (functional cookies).
4.2 We do not use cookies for behavioural advertising, profiling, or to build marketing profiles about you. We do not use Facebook Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, Hotjar, or similar tracking tools.

6. HOW WE OBTAIN YOUR CONSENT
6.1 When you first visit our website, you will see a cookie consent banner provided by CookieYes. This banner gives you clear options to:
(a) accept all cookies;
(b) reject all non-essential cookies; or
(c) customise your preferences by selecting which categories of cookies you wish to allow.
6.2 Strictly necessary cookies are always active and cannot be rejected, as they are essential for the website to function.
6.3 No analytics or functional cookies will be placed on your device unless you give your affirmative consent. We use Google Consent Mode v2 to ensure that Google Analytics and Google Ads tags do not fire until you have given consent.
6.4 Your consent preferences are stored in the cookieyes-consent cookie for one year. After that time, or if you clear your cookies, you will be asked to set your preferences again.
6.5 You can change or withdraw your consent at any time by clicking the cookie settings icon that appears on every page of our website, or by clearing your browser cookies and revisiting the site.
7. THIRD-PARTY COOKIES AND SERVICES
7.1 Some cookies on our website are set by third parties. We do not control these third-party cookies. The third parties whose cookies may appear on our website are:
(a) Google (Analytics and Ads) — for anonymous website usage statistics and conversion tracking;
(b) YouTube (owned by Google) — to enable embedded video playback; and
(c) PerfectPortal — to enable our secure online payments tool.
7.2 Our website also loads content and resources from the following third-party services, which may collect limited technical data (such as your IP address) but do not set cookies in the traditional sense:
(a) Google Fonts and Font Awesome — for website typography and icons; and
(b) Yoshki — for displaying our SRA Digital Badge.
7.3 We encourage you to review the privacy policies of these third-party services to understand how they use your data.
8. HOW TO MANAGE COOKIES
8.1 In addition to the controls provided by our cookie consent banner, you can manage cookies through your web browser settings. Most browsers allow you to:
(a) view what cookies are stored on your device and delete them individually or in bulk;
(b) block third-party cookies;
(c) block cookies from particular websites;
(d) block all cookies from being set; and
(e) delete all cookies when you close your browser.
8.2 Please be aware that if you block or delete cookies, some features of our website may not work as intended, and your user experience may be affected.
8.3 The following links explain how to manage cookies in popular browsers:
(a) Google Chrome: support.google.com/chrome/answer/95647
(b) Mozilla Firefox: support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cookies-information-websites-store-on-your-computer
(c) Microsoft Edge: support.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/delete-cookies-in-microsoft-edge
(d) Safari: support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/safari/sfri11471
9. GOOGLE CONSENT MODE
9.1 Our website uses Google Consent Mode v2, a framework that adjusts the behaviour of Google tags (including Google Analytics and Google Ads) based on the consent choices you make through our cookie banner.
9.2 If you do not consent to analytics or advertising cookies, Google tags will not store cookies or collect identifiable data. In this case, Google may still receive anonymised, cookieless signals (known as "pings") that do not identify you personally. These pings help us understand general website trends without compromising your privacy.
9.3 If you do give consent, Google Analytics and Google Ads tags will operate normally and may set the cookies listed in section 5 above.
10. WHAT DATA DO COOKIES COLLECT?
10.1 The cookies used on our website may collect the following types of data:
(a) your cookie consent preferences;
(b) a randomly generated identifier to distinguish you from other visitors (this does not identify you personally);
(c) information about which pages you visit, how long you spend on each page, and how you navigate through the website;
(d) technical information about your device, browser type, operating system, and screen resolution;
(e) your approximate geographic location (derived from your IP address, which is anonymised by Google Analytics); and
(f) whether you arrived at our website through a Google advertisement.
10.2 We do not use cookies to collect your name, email address, telephone number, or any other directly identifiable information.
11. WHO HAS ACCESS TO COOKIE DATA?
11.1 Data collected through analytics cookies is processed by Google LLC. Google processes this data on our behalf as a data processor, in accordance with our data processing agreement with Google and their applicable terms of service.
11.2 We have enabled IP anonymisation in Google Analytics, which means that your full IP address is not stored or accessible to us or to Google.
11.3 We do not sell, share, or otherwise make cookie data available to any other third party for their own purposes.
12. HOW LONG IS COOKIE DATA KEPT?
12.1 Each cookie has its own retention period, as set out in the table in section 5 above.
12.2 Google Analytics data linked to cookies is retained for 14 months, after which it is automatically deleted. We do not extend this retention period.
12.3 You can delete cookies from your device at any time using your browser settings (see section 8).
13. INTERNATIONAL TRANSFERS
13.1 Data collected through Google Analytics and YouTube cookies may be transferred to and processed in countries outside the United Kingdom, including the United States, by Google LLC.
13.2 Where such transfers take place, we rely on appropriate safeguards, including the UK International Data Transfer Agreement and any applicable adequacy decisions made by the UK government, to ensure that your data is protected in accordance with the UK GDPR.
13.3 For further information about international transfers, please see our Privacy Policy.
14. YOUR RIGHTS
14.1 Where cookies collect personal data, you have the same rights under the UK GDPR as described in our Privacy Policy, including the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, and object to the processing of your data.
14.2 You also have the right to withdraw your consent to non-essential cookies at any time. You can do this through our cookie consent banner or by adjusting your browser settings.
14.3 If you have any concerns about cookies or the way we use your data, please contact us using the details below.
15. CHANGES TO THIS POLICY
15.1 We may update this cookie policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use, changes in the law, or updates to regulatory guidance (including guidance from the ICO).
15.2 Where we make significant changes, we will take reasonable steps to notify you. The most current version of this policy will always be available on our website.
