Family Dept Call for MP Visit to Discuss Cohabitation Laws

03 Nov 2017

The Family Department have invited Peter Kyle MP to visit the Family Department to discuss the current lack of rights for cohabiting couples. There are over £3m cohabiting couples in the UK. Should these couples separate they currently have little or no legal protection – despite the myth of “common law marriage”. 3 things that don't exist Julian Hunt believes that “cohabitation reform is desperately needed and overdue. The current lack of protection can cause great unfairness with catastrophic affects both upon a cohabitee and dependent children”. The request is made to coincide with Resolution’s cohabitation awareness raising week (27 November to 1 December). Our Family Department are members of Resolution, a national organisation of family law lawyers committed to non-confrontational divorce, separation and other family problems.
